Y'see,
this all got started when Sharpe and Kramer (see 'links') decided
to put together a disc of local radio celebrities singing christmas
songs. Pretty much a karaoke-type affair, and they asked Erik
if he wanted to do a song. He agreed, and recorded a rocked up
version of "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow".
Sharpe offered the services of his newly-built studio to re-record
it with live drums. Ty engineered and recorded it in the course
of a few hours, and the finished product was debuted on KMJX -
Magic 105.1 FM in Little Rock. The response was excellent, but
a common question was asked... "Where can we get it? What
cd is it on?"
The
CD that was originally planned fell through, but Sharpe, Erik
and Ty began brainstorming on a full band idea. They called Darrell,
who agreed to lay solos, and The Screaming Santas were born. Erik
locked himself away in his room when he wasn't at work, much to
the 'frustration' of his then-girlfriend, and emerged two months
later with finished demos (yes, it's an oxymoron, we know!)
The first album, A Very Hairy
Christmas was released in the fall of 2001, with some serious
airplay and outstanding word-of-mouth, both locally and on the
web. An appearance on "Daybreak" on KATV - ABC 7 the
day before the show at Juanita's was scheduled, with word from
the newsperson that there had been a lot of "gettin' the
groove on" back in the control rooms. The show date went
off without a hitch, including confetti and Ty's firebreathing
bit.
Around
February of 2002, new songs began to take shape. Before they new
it, The Santas were back in the recording studio cranking out
what would be thier second release, Going Insane
At Christmas. The learning curve having been dramatically
altered, the Santas redid a few tunes from the first disc, plus
several band new cuts and the full-uncensored version of "12
Days", which in the words of one guy from Warner Brothers,
"The eighties guys are either gonna love this or put a hit
out on your heads!"
The Screaming Santas have since gone "on hiatus" as Sharpe runs
his own DJ service along with The
Great Gonzo Game Show, Darrell got married and is living
happy, and Erik and Ty are members of Bombay
Black. |
